A tidy Downloads folder, without losing anything along the way.

Download Organizer sorts your files into folders by type. Before anything moves, it shows where each file will go. Nothing gets overwritten, and you can undo.

An app window with eight files in Downloads. The preview shows where each one goes. When organized, six go to category folders and one goes to a custom rule's folder. The file whose name already exists at the destination stays put, and the download in progress is skipped.

            Built not to surprise you

Organizing files seems simple until one goes missing. Every feature is there so you know what will happen before it happens.

            Rules for your own folders

Send files to your own folders by name. Try a pattern below: * is any text and ? is one character.

2 of 8 files go to the rule

            Nothing gets overwritten

If a file with the same name already exists at the destination, yours stays where it is. In the preview, you can choose to rename it.

            Safe across drives

With the destination on another drive, each file is copied and checked, and only then removed from the source.

            Copy
            Check
            Remove from source

            Automatic, when you want it

Off by default. When on, it waits until a file has gone 10 seconds without writes before moving it.

            Folders in your language

New folders follow your Windows language, or the one you choose. Existing folders and the files in them are left alone.

            Preview before moving

See each file's destination and choose which ones to move. Only what you confirm leaves its place.

            Real undo

Every operation is in the history. A file goes back to where it was, but only if it hasn't changed since it moved.

            Activity history

See what moved, when and where. Every operation can be opened and undone.

            How it works

Four steps, and you confirm the last one.

            1. Choose a folder

Usually Downloads. Only the files at its top level are included, not subfolders.

            2. Set your preferences

Pick the destination, which categories are on and, if you like, rules for your own folders.

            3. Check the preview

Every file shows its planned destination. Conflicts and skipped files are marked.

            4. Organize

Confirm and you're done. Everything goes into the history, ready to undo.

            Privacy and security

An app that handles your files has to earn your trust. Here's what it does, what it doesn't, and why.

            • No account

No sign-up and no login. Install it and use it.

            • No telemetry

The app collects no usage data and sends no reports.

            • No cloud

Your files and your history stay on your computer.

            Its only network connection

At startup and every 6 hours, the app asks GitHub whether there's a new version. This shares your IP address with GitHub and sends no file data. Turn off automatic updates in Settings and this connection stops too.

            What's kept on your computer

A local database stores what's needed to show your history and undo safely:

            • file paths
            • sizes
            • dates
            • content hashes

The hash makes it possible to confirm a file hasn't changed before returning it. When reporting a problem, remove personal file names and paths, and don't attach the database.

            Technical decisions, and why

            Never overwrite
Losing a file is worse than leaving one in place. Conflicts stay in the source until you decide.
Undo only if the file is unchanged
If you edited a file after it moved, moving it back could destroy your work. The hash is checked first.
            Across drives: copy, check, remove
A move between drives is a copy. The original is deleted only after the copy is checked.
            Wait 10 s without writes
Avoids moving a download that hasn't finished. Temporary files are skipped too, but no check can catch every case.
            Top level only
Subfolders usually hold your own organization. The app stays out of them.
            Automatic is off by default
Nothing moves unless you ask, until you turn automatic organization on.
            Signed updates
Every update is checked against a public key built into the app before it installs.
            Separated release steps
The installer is built and tested in CI. Signing happens on a clean machine without the project's code, and the release stays a draft until it's tested by hand.
            Minimal permissions
The interface runs under a strict content policy and has no direct disk access: only the app's own commands touch files. Beyond Tauri's defaults, it can only open the folder picker and control its window.
            Open source
All of this can be checked in the code, under the MIT license.

            One limitation, stated plainly

The installer isn't Authenticode-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you before it opens. The download page explains what you'll see and how to check the file first.

            Frequently asked questions

What people usually ask before installing.

            Is it free?

Yes. Download Organizer is free and open source under the MIT license. No paid plan, no ads, no account.

Does it work on Windows 10, macOS or Linux?

For now, only on Windows 11 (64-bit). The app is in beta.

Can it delete or overwrite my files?

It moves files; it doesn't delete them. If a file with the same name already exists at the destination, yours stays where it is. Across drives, the original is removed only after the copy is checked. And everything can be undone from the history, as long as the file hasn't changed.

What about downloads that haven't finished?

Temporary files and downloads still being written are skipped. With automatic organization, the app also waits until a file has gone 10 seconds without writes. No check can catch every case, so use the preview if you're unsure.

            Does it organize subfolders too?

No. Only files at the top level of the chosen folder are included. Subfolders usually hold your own organization, and the app leaves them alone.

Do I need to keep the app open?

Only for automatic organization, which is off by default. When it's on, closing the window keeps the app in the system tray; choose Quit from the tray icon to stop it. It can also start with Windows if you turn that on.

Does the app send my data anywhere?

No. There's no account, telemetry or cloud. Its only connection is the update check with GitHub, at startup and every 6 hours, which shares your IP address with GitHub and sends no file data. You can turn it off in Settings.

Why does Windows warn me when I open the installer?

The installer isn't Authenticode-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show a warning. The download page walks you through it and shows how to check the SHA-256 hash before installing.

            How do I uninstall it?

From Windows Settings, under Installed apps. Your organized files are never touched. Settings and history stay in %APPDATA%\com.thonyy.download-organizer until you delete that folder.

Ready to clean up your Downloads folder?

Install it, look at the preview and decide. If you don't like it, undo.
